Letters: U.S. killing innocents in war on terrorism
One of the first decisions made by President Obama after he was inaugurated early this year, with his promise of "change we can believe in," was to send U.S. military "drones" into the skies over Pakistan to fire missiles at "the bad guys."
Recently, in one of those drone attacks, more than 100 civilians living in the city of Peshawar, including women and children, were killed; their lives ended, their innocent bodies torn to pieces. Asked in an interview if she considered such attacks as terrorism, our Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton, calmly responded, "No, I do not."
This brings to mind the infamous assertion of Secretary of State Madeline Albright who, in 2003, described the deaths of 500,000 Iraqi children during Bill Clinton's undeclared war against Iraq as mere "collateral damage." "Yes," she said, "I think the price was worth it." Mrs. Albright was invited soon thereafter to give a speech at the prestigious Yale Divinity School on her faith in God.
Will the violence, the insanity of war, or the absurdities uttered by people in high places ever come to an end? Surely, for the sake of the future of humanity and the survival of our country, there is another way.
As Edwin Markham put it: "There is a destiny that makes us brothers; None goes her way alone; All that we send into the lives of others, Comes back into our own."
